  • Broken Render Queue? Error message saying directory doesn’t exist but it does…

Posted by First Last on May 7, 2009 at 5:24 pm

This is driving me crazy! I cannot use the render queue…

When I set the output in the render queue I get this error unless I am replacing a file that is already there:

“After Effects error: making file reference – file not found (-43).
    ( 3 :: 159)”

This does not make sense because the system is supposed to create the file and I have never had this problem before.

I can get past that by either replacing a file that is there or using the Output To drop-down. Then I try to render and I get this error:

“The directory originally specified in the selected output module no longer exists.”

That is simply not true. It does exist.

Anybody have a clue why this is happening? I deleted preference files and it had no effect…

Things I have changed since it was working:

    1. I installed the CS4 demo and decided it was not worth upgrading right now and reinstalled CS3. It doesn’t seem like that would cause these problems but computers can be wonky…

    2. I got a new external hard drive connected through eSata. It is not named the same as any other hard drive and I don’t have any other problems with it.

I can still export using file > export but since I am trying to export multiple items it is a bit of a pain to have to sit here the whole time waiting for each one to export so I can start the next. Hence the render queue… but it is broken…

Hmmm. Mac or PC? What OS? If the directory path contains illegal characters or too many characters that can be an issue.

Have you tries resetting preferences to default? Hold down Ctrl + Shift + Alt or Cmd + Shift + Option when the application launches.

Sorry I should have mentioned that…I am on OSX version 10.5.x

I deleted the preference files already…I did not know about that shortcut. I will try it although it is probably the same thing…

I changed the drive name to something shorter (hopefully Final Cut won’t hate me now but it is probably a good thing anyway). It wasn’t that long but it was longer than it needed to be (default name…I never changed it).

I will let you know if these things work…

    Thank you!

What worked for me was simply changing the first two directories of the first two renders and the next few hundred renders would work fine. Good luck!

i am having the same problem. did you change the name of the directories or just where you saved them? has anyone else found a solution to this problem?

Had the exact same error message each time with After Effects CS3 on Snow Leopard. Project shortcuts could never locate the last project file opened, and I could not import anything into the project without getting that message. I did solve the problem by shortening the name of the RAID where my files for the AE project were located. The drive’s name was very long with a hyphen in it. Once I simplified the name, AE seems to be working fine now.

I was getting this error because I had other comps in the queue that were directed differently, I cleared my queue and all is well. Probably not your problem, but may be somebody elses.

    Thanks

Thank you, Rob White. I cleared my queue as you advised. It works fine now.
