Posted by Myles Berman on May 30, 2007 at 9:13 pm

I am editing a show and they require that, “Each new segment should begin at the top of the next minute. Leave at least 15 seconds of black between program segments for commercial holes.” Does this mean that I have to end each segment at any given minute and 45 seconds to accomodate both of these requirements? In addition, the show has to be a certain length, is the 15 seconds of black in between these segments included as part of the prjoect time?

This is a question you ask the network engineers. Anything we say will be conjecture and could end up wrong. Ask the network for clarification. I do this all the time. They don’t think any less of you for doing this.

Even if they do, it shouldn’t mean much seeing as you’re the creative guy and he’s an engineer:)

No, your segment can be any length, but if your segment finishes at xx:46″ then go onto the next minute ( ie 1′ 14′ on) to start the next segment.

No, your TRT is just YOUR sum of the segements.

THis is why he needs to contact the network. Because I am required to submit a show with :25 second blacks between acts and the TRT is to be 1:33:52:00 INCLUDING those Act breaks.

Only the network will be able to tell you exactly what you need to know.

Agreed, but if they say spin onto the next minute I would have thought the TRT is the programme segment sum, not the tape TRT.

And of course be sure you’re editing in a Drop Frame timeline so you can accurately time out the show since you’re editing in the U.S. A Non-Drop timeline will have different timing so make sure you’re in DF.
