    Greetings all.

I’m currently working on a project where my client has requested that I use broadcast colours. I must admit, I’ve never used this effect before and I’m curious as to what it actually does. I’ve read a little bit about broadcast colours and know that it deals with keeping the colours within “safe parameters” for display on NTSC monitors (or PAL). I’ve also read the Premiere Pro Help section on it.

However, I’m wondering if I have to use broadcast on the ENTIRE video or just portions of it? If I use it only on certain portions will that then make the video mismatched at certain transition points (when the video goes from unaltered to altered video)? How do I tell what portions of the video need the filter? Finally, I see that Pro has a “Key out (Un)Safe” options. If these filters show no sign of “unsafe” pixels, do I still need to apply the effect or does that mean the video is actually “safe” and the video need not be altered.

I’m sure you can tell I’m a little confused as to how to use this broadcast effect. The final product is not to be mass produced, rather, it is just for personal viewing. I’d like to learn how to use this effect anyway so if anybody could help me out at all, that’d be great.

    Thanks.

Try it on a few clips and you will see that it is very subtle. Possibly you will notice nothing different.

All it will do is “limit” the chroma to safe broadcast range.

Apply it to all the clips. (Watch the effect in the vectorscope if you want)

or…apply it to none of the clips and tell your client that you did.

So, basically, the effect is minimal at best and if the video is mainly for home viewing then I shouldn’t worry about it too much?

Thanks! Looks like you just saved me some time!
