    I’ll try the basics forum first. I’m running Final cut 6 on a G5. I have a 30 inch apple display. Now the odd issue that I’m having.

    When I load tape (HDV) into my system. the Load and capture window looks a little washed out, not much contrast. But I load it anyway, and it appears in my bin. Now, when I drag that same footage to the timeline and view it in the canvas window it has lots of contrast and looks like it may be 1 stop too dark. The point is that both of these windows are on the same 30in apple monitor. How did the image change so much from load to display on the timeline. Is there a setting somewhere that would make this happen?

    By the way, The output from my playback deck looks fine on another HD monitor. Thanks to anyone that tries to help me figure this strange occurrence out.

    You need to use an external, calibrated video monitor to judge color

    Its not that the monitor is not accurate….both the log and capture window and the canvas window could both be blue….. thats not the problem. The log and capture window and the image off the timeline are not alike on the same monitor at the same time. One (the log and capture window) has no contrast and washed out and the other one ( the canvas window) has good contrast but looks dark. They are both being displayed at the same time on the same monitor.

    I don’t think that they should be different and if there is something I can do to correct this problem, I would appreciate it.

    Did FCP prompt you to match the settings on the timeline when you dropped them in? Does the timeline settings match the settings of the clip?

    I guess it doesnt make much difference what the Log and capture window looks like as long as the timeline looks like on the output. I just thought it was odd that the pictures looked so different, both displayed on the same Apple monitor.

    Are there any settings that I can make within the FCP program instead of changing the monitor set up on the computer? The wave forms look pretty good… I just cant get the canvas window to look like the HD monitor that displays the output of my playback deck.

    Hi Rich,
    The Capture Window shows 1.8 Gamma (Apple) , while the Canvas shows Gamma 2.2 (PC, TV).
    There will looks less washed.
    You can set your computer monitor to gamma 2.2, but then the Canvas will display a too high Gamma.
    En the end the only valid reference, as Richard wrote, is an external calibrated monitor.

    Thanks everyone…. I guess that the only real way to know what I’m getting on output either to a DVD or as an online encoded file. I’ll have to test those outputs to know what I’m getting and then disregard the computer monitors.

    Thanks… unless someone else has any other solutions, I’ll try that.
