  • Brightness bug when changing levels?

Posted by Jaanus Henno on March 4, 2011 at 10:56 am

    Hi!
I’m working with Pro 10 and for my surprise when I make the footage brighter through Brightness and Contrast FX and then add Levels by pulling Input End to the left, my previously added brightness jumps back into a darker position! I have brighness on +12, then I change it to +28, then go and make backround lighter by pulling Input End to the left, and then I go back to brightness and it’s again back on 12!

Is there a fix for that?

    Thanks.

Not seeing it on Pro 10.0a
If you’re using a newer version, it just might be a bug and should be reported to Sony.
In the meantime, I suggest learning to use Color Curves as Brightness affects the entire image while Curves can be limited to a specific range.

You should probably report this to Sony so they can fix it, but I agree with Mike, use Color Curves instead. Brightness and Contrast is a rather primitive plug-in that should be avoided.

I just tried this on Pro 10.0c on a machine at work and no matter what I do I can’t reproduce this problem.

Double check first Jaanus to make sure you dont have
any added keframes added while doing your adjustments.

What Steve says, and this happens when you’ve got Sync Cursor activated (and is that now Animate in VP10?).

Thank you all for the answers,
I will check out the color curves filter. I understand now that I should better learn to use all the effets now, otherwise I find something really useful after all the work is done, and sometimes it means to do it all again with the new effect.

Btw. Is there some good guide for in depth instructions for Vegas effects?

Steve, I do have many keyframes added, light is changing a lot in my footage and that’s the problem. But why should that affect the change in brightness while changing the levels?

Is there some more automated way to balance out all the changes in the brightness, especially I have a footage where a person is sitting in front a window and when the sun comes out, it blacks out all the light from the room. Well, I should have thought about that, but what to do, it is what it is.
Some plugin to set the required brighness and levels for what you want and the rest of the footage will be adjusted according to those settings? That would be really useful.

“Is there some more automated way to balance out all the changes in the brightness…”

Try the free Auto Levels plug-in from Mike Crash.

Sorry Mike, that plugin has an adjustment flaw (colors keep
    changeing during playback).
Highlighted that flaw in a previous post, which makes it basically
unusable…Further developement should have continued on these
    handy little buggers.

[Jaanus Henno] “Btw. Is there some good guide for in depth instructions for Vegas effects? “

If you want to learn about color correcting, we (VASST) have an excellent DVD that covers the topic:

Absolute Training for Vegas+DVD, Vol. 4: Color Correction, Enhancement and Image Restoration

This will give you a good foundation for how to approach and handle the various correcting scenarios that you are likely to encounter while editing.

What you could do is duplicate the events and use the Mask in Pan/Crop to apply different levels to the different areas but if the camera is moving or the subject moves a lot then the moving mask will be very difficult to maintain.

This is never going to look good. You really need to reshoot it and be more mindful of your exposure when you do. If you don’t take the time to manually expose for your subjects, then you are always going to have lots of trouble in post.
