I need a brief intense camera shake for about 5 frames – like the impact of someone getting punched. Any ideas or should I just move the camera around in both x,y,z space? Is there a way to get wiggle to work quickly and then turn off?

You could add a Checkbox- or Slider Expression Control effect and base the wiggle expression on the checkbox/slider value. You can then keyframe the slider/checkbox.

See this page for an example of starting a wiggle at a set time and then stopping it at a set time.
