    Are there any good techniques to help people that make breathing sounds when being interviewed?

    I tend to have breathing sounds when I speak. For me it is very easy to fix that in Audition but it is tedious to do it for a whole interview and involves some risk in that you edit too close to speech.

    Obviously it would be better if you could help the interviewee to avoid that.
    Are there any techniques you can use to help them avoid that?

    HI Mark and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

    Is the problem their inhales? Can you post something?

    If you’re using limiting and compression, inhales can get a lot bigger than normal.

    Trying to direct someone about breath sounds who’s being interviewed is probably the wrong approach. It’ll probably make them self-conscious and screw up their responses.

    mic type and placement can help. some mics are more sensitive (less impedance) so will pick up lip smacking, light breathing a lot more. also pointing underneath and up will be a lot more transparent than at an angle above.

    Hi Chris,

    Impedance doesn’t have a lot to do with audio sensitivity. You can wangle just about any impedance by how you design the output circuitry. I’ve known some ribbon mics that come in about 50-200 ohms. They are a lot less sensitive than condenser mics.

    Condenser mics are more sensitive than Dynamic mics or Ribbon mics for one simple reason. Condenser mics use floating diaphragms. Dynamic mics have diaphragms, but they have a coil of wire attached to them, so they don’t move as freely to catch the higher frequencies. Ribbon mics have a similar problem. The mass of the ribbon is much greater than that of a condenser diaphragm, so it doesn’t move to those very high frequency sounds.

    Gating helps reduce the sounds in between the words.
