I have a polygon model of a football helmet in .obj format. Its modeled from several parts but imports as a single poly mesh.

Is there a way to break the model up? Subdivide it back out into its individual parts so I can apply a texture to each?

Setting selections would be my approach. Select the polys you want to be texture “A” then in the selection menu choose “Set Selection” now you just assign the texture to that selection. You can repeat this for all the sections.

If you want to seperate the geometry select the piece you want to break off and in the “Functions” menu select “SPLIT” then you get two pieces.

Functions>Explode Segments will probably do what you’re after. What that does is split the object into groups of connected polygons.
