    Hi All,

I self taught myself FCP back when it was FCP2 and 3, during that period, my workflow consisted of: Capturing DV>editing footage>exporting final clip as a quick time movie>bringing in to AE>Adding more effects > then exporting as another quick time clip.

As you can see it was probably a very bad and time consuming way of editing, at the time it worked, although very long and drawn out. Especially when working with footage in AE, redendering time was horrendous, plus I always lost quality. As I said, i kinda picked things up as I went along and maybe picked up bad habbits along the way, which is why im looking to rectify them now.

Today I have recently shot my first hdv project using the sony z1, which I want to bring into FCP5 and AE to edit and add effects. I wanted to know what would be a recomended workflow for a project that consists of minor effects in AE and major editing in FCP with out losing to much quality.

I’ll be honest I dont know what is the best way to import clips into AE and then import back into FCP without losing quality or in what lossless format, (Is there even a way to use a reference clip to save on rendering time?, does such an approach exits?) I have heard the term media manager being bounced around, but I dont know if that bares any relevance to my dilema and what exactly it does.

Forgot to add, I would appreciate any advice or examples of working process, and advice on things to avoid.

    Thanks for your time people.

When you export from FCP, just export a reference movie (Export>QuickTime movie> then un-check “Make self contained”). Bring that into AE and work on it. When you render out of AE, select the QuickTime codec that you are editing in in FCP (which in your case would be the native HDV codec). I haven’t used HDV yet, but I believe that QuickTime should have a codec for that, and it should be available in the QuickTime export settings from AE.

This way you should be capturing and editing HDV, adding FX to HDV, and then bringing it back into FCP as HDV. You should be able to avoid any re-compression to a different codec that way.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks very much Todd. Im actually capturing in the DV format although I filmed in HDV. This is because I’ve been well informed that HDV editing on my machine is not powerful enough, and will tend to cause sluggishness in FCP5. Im running a G5 1.8ghz with currently only a gig of ram. Hopefully before I start editing again I should have more ram. And going forward a better graphics card.

Thanks very much for your advice.!
