    Hello-

I am breaking a film into reels for a color correct but I wanted the reels to be the proper length if there was ever a film-out. In the past I have always made Reel 1 around 15 minutes and the rest around 21 min. This film that I am working on fades to black at the end of every scene and has music and sfx carry across these transitions as well. I am working with the client’s offline mix so the final mix could possibly change.

Has anyone had experience breaking up a like this for a film-out in the past? What have you had to do?

    Thanks,

    Eugene

    Hi Eugene,

I saw your post and meant to reply sooner … hope it isn’t too late. If I were you I’d talk to an experienced sound mixer or post people at your local film lab, they probably won’t mind giving you some tips.

The way I was taught to break film into reels is to not have ANY sound bleed over the reel breaks. Similarly, you need to be mindful of the sound that occurs at the start of a new reel. If there is a bad changeover in the theater, then the audience might not see and/or hear the first few moments of the reel. So you don’t want anything too important in that section.

    Hope this helps,
