  • Brand new JVC GY-HM100U .mov files won’t play in FCP (7)

Posted by Michael Kranitz on October 6, 2011 at 3:36 am

I just bought the new JVC GY-HM100U from the Apple Store precisely because of the native import to FCP.

I recorded a test video in .mov format and dumped it on my Mac. It imported into iMovie just fine and played. It also played natively in QT. When I imported it into FCP, it squealed and popped. No video.

    Can someone help?

The .mov is just an extension. The codec from JVC is a Long GOG file. ProRes would still be a better choice for editing.

    Hi Michael

From what I know of that camera you should be able to drop the files straight into FCP, just as you’re trying. It’s just like shooting with an EX camera except the files are pre-wrapped in the mov container. It sounds to me like you have an issue within FCP, not with the files themselves, particularly as you can play them using QuickTime.

Have you tried trashing your preferences? It’s a bit of a catch-all response to a problem but in this case it seems a likely solution.
