Brand new 8-core, why all the rendering?
Greetings Cowheads.
After trying out an 8-core Intel Mac Pro at my local Apple Store a few weeks ago, I was amazed at the way it handled rendering. As in, basically none was required. I loaded up a piece of test video (HDV) on their machine and layered about a dozen effects on it before it turned “red” and asked for a render before playback. Fantastic!
So I bought one. But to my great disappointment, mine asks to be rendered just as often as it did on my older G5 Quad. I’m running FCS2 (upgrade version) and have all of my playback settings at “Dynamic”, so what’s the deal?
BAH! I HATE WAITING FOR RENDERS!

The machine’s ability to do RT has as much to do with the HARD DRIVES that the media is stored on as much as it has to do with processors. Well, perhaps even MORE so. The Faster the drive RAID, the better the performance. If you are working off a single SATA drive, you might get 1 layer, two if you are lucky. But with a 5 drive RAID you’ll get more..8 drive even more.
SO what you need is a SATA Raid…or even 3 drives raided internally on the MacPro would do you good. And remember…keep footage OFF the internal system drive.

Right now I’m working off an X-Serve RAID via a SanMP Fibrechannel connection. I also do some work off of an additional external Firewire two-drive enclosure that has been single striped.
Any advice knowing this information?

WELL THEN. This would be good information to have up front so I don’t sound like a complete ARSE! (lol)
What are your RT settings set to? The HDV footage you loaded…did you load it as HDV native, or as AIC? Uhh….not sure what else to suggest as I have never dealt with HDV natively captured.

The rendering issue that you are seeing comes from RT not being set correctly and if it is then its a memory issue.
Mac Pro systems are very different from G5 systems. There is a specific order and placement of RAM bars of like sizes and like manufacturers. Here look at this from Apple:
