    Hi Folks

I am new here. I love Sony vegas and have been using the trial version for a few weeks and then noticed on ebay a brand new factory sealed version of Vegas 6.0. When I go to install it my DvD drive which works great whirrs and whirrs and sony intro music starts up but then it just continues whirring. Sometimes I get this message:

    Fatal error
Could not load product information from sfmsi.dat Please check that this file is in the source installation folder

I have a 45 minute video almost ready to burn with prescious footage of a once in a lifetime east AFrican safari vacation. I dont know what to do next. I just dont want to lose my several weeks of work but I do need to install Vegas at some point. Any help out there? I would be very very appreciative! to say the least!

    Thanks

    Don

You don’t need to install from CD. Instead, just download the most current version from Sony, install that, and then register it with the serial number you received.

jetitdv is right on – I haven’t had a cd since version 4. All you need is the activation code and you are good to go.

    thanks folks

One of the things I was hoping for by downloading from CD is the option to save files as .veg My files are only available to save in vmf. format. Am I doing something wrong? New guy here as I said and still learning!

    thanks

Sounds to me like you’re using Vegas Movie Studio. The full Vegas saves as .VEG – the other file type is used by the little brother.

There’s a new Movie Studio forum here:

So… what did you purchase? Vegas? Or Vegas Movie Studio? Either way I’d just install and register from the download version.

Yes thats exactly what I am using bud… Hopefully no one will make fun of me here for trying to use this as my first video editing software…

What are some of the major advantages of the big version as opposed to what I have? I know there may be many so if you could kindly mention some of the major ones I would be greatful. I am already greatful for the generous help I have found here already…

There’s a comparison of the Vegas products on Sony’s website:
    https://www.sonymediasoftware.com/products/showproduct.asp?PID=977&FeatureID=8357

The biggest difference is the number of tracks. I can’t do even a simple project with just four tracks. I just finished a two-camera project and it had over twenty tracks when I was done.

Vegas Movie Studio is a GREAT product – just doesn’t save VEG files. I’d never make fun of you for using VMS and am happy to help answer questions. The full version can even open VMS files (but VMS can’t open Vegas files). Here’s some of the major differences:

    Unlimited video tracks
    Unlimited audio tracks
    Advanced color correction
    Video scopes
    Automation Envelopes
    Bus Tracks
    5.1 audio tools
    Project nesting
    Better hardware support

And one of my favorites (and one I wouldn’t want to live without): SCRIPTS
