Thought I had it all figured out but I guess not…

I made a basic 3D box with alpha. Lid opens and stuff goes into it. From there I render it for FCP to be supered over a moving background.

    The steps:
    1. Duplicated the box (precomp2),
    2. Masked off the front and side showing,
    3. Moved it to the top of the heap (stuff falling into box underneath mask),
    4. Animated stuff falling into box,
    5. Oops! Some of the stuff falls all the way through the box and out the bottom!

Without using opacity or wipes on the stuff, is there a better way to mask off the bottom of the box so the stuff doesn’t show?

My neurons stopped firing about an hour ago and all I can see are keyframe diamonds…

    Thanks for your ideas,
    John

PS This version is 5.5 pro

Managed to get the effect by doing a black mask around the bottom but had to luma key it in FCP. Would like NOT to have to do that if I don’t have to…

Ohhh man, this is a test of my knowledge of AE 5.5… Do you have track mattes? If not are you comfortable using the Set Matte effect? There should be a way to invert the masked black solid and use it to define the areas where the items falling into the box are visible, but I’m living in CS3 land here :O

There’s track matte in AE 5,5, or is that version 6? Anyway, can you precomp all the animated stuff that goes into the box and mask the precomp? That should do it.

Many thanks. That does the trick.
