I downloaded the Boris Red 15 day trial so I could try out motion tracking for text. I had the 64 bit version of 10 installed, so I uninstalled that and put in the 32 bit version. (Boris’ website only gives an option for 32 bit)

Here’s my problem: Not all of the program seems to be integrated into Vegas. In the “video FX” tab, for instance, I can only see “Boris Red 4” which seems to open up the Boris 4 engine. Under the transitions tab, Boris Red 4 only shows one effect – default. And when I go to track compositing mode/custom/2 to 1 transforms folder, I only see the 3 Vegas maps.

I did check the plug in folder for Vegas 10 and it includes the BorisRED4 WFL, WMG,and WTR .dlls. Also in there is the BorisRed4.dll.

    Any suggestions?

And if I can fix that, can anyone point me to a tutorial explaining motion tracking text. I found many excellent tutorials on Boris’ website, but none that seem to pertain to motion tracking Boris text as opposed to a still photo or video file.

    Thanks.

What you have seen is what you currently get with Boris RED 4 in Vegas until RED 5 comes out which will be better integrated into Vegas Pro 10. When you add Boris RED as an FX, you have to make several adjustments in the GUI (like tell it project properties and the length of the event you just placed it on) that you will not have to do in RED 5. You will also have to manually load the video into RED (even though you just placed it on an event) to do any tracking in the current version. This too will not have to be done with RED 5; it will work as you expect it to with full motion playback.

In general, if you are interested in Boris RED, I would wait until RED 5 is released to see what the workflow is really like. Currently it is much easier to do motion tracking with BCC7 for Vegas Pro because this has already been integrated with thew Vegas OFX API. So don’t judge RED by what you see today. It is all about to change for the better with RED 5.

Still you could use it stand-alone like you would After Effects and see what it’s capable of.

Text is just another layer like any other still image or video file layer. There is nothing different about tracking it. If you looked at this RED tutorial you just apply the motion tracker to the text layer.

Motion Tracking Filters: The Easy Stuff

In this Boris TV episode, I show you how to track text using BCC7 and Match Move which will also be available in the new verision of RED:

    Hope that helps,

Very much so – thank you.

I’m new to the After Effects/Boris motion tracking stuff. What I’m really interested in right now is learning how to motion track text.

I did watch both your tutorial and the ones on the website before I downloaded the trial version. Being a newbie, I didn’t realize there wasn’t a difference between text, photos, and stills as it relates to motion tracking.

Also, I didn’t realize I could do that with Match Move. The motion tracking piece of Continuum is $199 as opposed to $995 for Red or even $595 for Continuum Complete. The only downside is Continuum Motion Tracking doesn’t include text. So I would need to purchase Graffiti to create extrusions. Is it possible to use Pro Type Titler or the Text tool in Vegas to generate text to then apply motion tracking data to all inside of Vegas? If that’s the case, I’ll take a very serious look at that purchase.

    Thanks John.

Yes you can track a title in Vegas made from Generated Text Media or ProType Titler. It just won’t be extruded into 3D. The Motion Tracker will track anything that’s on the 2nd track.

The 3D Objects is also available as a separate Continuum Unit but costs $399. Together with the Motion Tracker at $199 that’s the entire introductory price of BCC7 so you might as well just buy that. This just points put how great a value BCC7 is though, because it includes 150 other tools besides these including one of the best Chroma Keyers, Noise Reduction, UpRez, super Slow Motion, etc. It’s a really valuable set of tools for Vegas Pro editors.

Great point. If I’m just interested in basic text extrusion, is there a big benefit to purchasing Graffiti as well? I’m a little confused as to what Graffiti offers as there appears to be overlap between the Boris products.

I just downloaded the Motion Tracker module, so it’s time to play!

[Nathan Halder] ” I’m a little confused as to what Graffiti offers as there appears to be overlap between the Boris products. “

Graffiti does all kinds of Titles. It has a very extensive collection of templates for 2D text and it can also do 3D extruded text, extruded EPS, 3D shapes such as cylinders, spheres and cubes, and a whole lot more. You can also animate text on a path. All of these can be placed into 3D containers and manipulated in 3D space. It probably has all the text capability you’ll ever need but all of it is also included in Boris RED (which contains all the features of both Boris Graffiti and Boris FX combined with even more capabilities).

    Just to recap:
Boris Graffiti is for all kinds of titles both 2D and 3D
Boris FX is for special effects (motion tracking, chroma key, etc.)
Boris RED = Boris Graffiti + Boris FX + more plug-ins.

Since Boris FX also contains Motion Tracking (and a whole lot more), another option for you is to buy Boris Graffiti and Boris FX. This would give you a lot more capability than just buying the Boris Continuum Unit Motion Tracking and Graffiti alone.

    Thanks John.

Your recap is the clearest differentiation I’ve seen between the Boris products.

Can you tell me the steps on creating a animated spline in Boris Red?I see this is the latest effects TV producers are using these days.
