Boris Red and rendering with an alpha channel

There is no reason to render at all. Use Boris RED 5 as a plug-in to Sony Vegas Pro 10 and it will work fine in your project. Just drop RED onto an empty event in Vegas and open the RED GUI and then open the RED project you created with the map. It should display properly on the Vegas timeline with an alpha channel.

If you every need to render with an alpha channel, I would use the QuickTime Animation codec. It was designed for adding animations to video.

You’re absolutely right about the newer version of RED 5, it’s now leaving as a 3rd party effect in sony vegas Pro.

But for the moment, I’m still with Boris Red 4.2.

I did an animation with the standalone version, so I need to render it for the moment. I will try with the Quicktime animation.

John, Is there a kind of update for this CODEC (QT Animation )or the version that is available with RED will do job perfectly ?

That should work fine as a plug-in to Vegas Pro 32-bit. I used it all the time in Vegas Pro 9.

Just make sure that you have the latest version of Apple QuickTime and you’ll have the latest in all your applications. They all use QuickTime to do the actual rendering.

Because as far as I’m concerned, before the Red version 5, it’s never been a plug-ins for sony vegas pro.

Anyway, I will check if my quicktime apps are up to date.

Hmmm… I’m not sure what you are referring to but RED has always been a plug-in to Vegas. I’ve been using Boris RED 4 as a plug-in to Vegas since Sony Vegas 6 (check the Boris RED 4.3 installer if you don’t believe me. Sony Vegas 6, 7, & 8 are all listed). The only thing that has changed in Vegas Pro 10 is that you can now preview live video in the Boris RED GUI whereas before you only got a representative frame, but other than that I’ve been making 3D text and animated handwriting text, etc. with RED 4 in Vegas for years and years.

What has not been supported is 64-bit. Only Vegas Pro 8.0 32-bit was supported. 64-bit support was added with Boris RED 5 so if you were using RED 4 with Vegas Pro 8.0 or 9.0 64-bit then you are correct, it did not show up as a plug-in.

I am working on Sony Vegas Pro 10 64 bits. That’s why I could not use RED 4.3 as a plug-ins.

Maybe I should upgrade Red to version 5 ?

IMHO, it is well worth it for the upgrade price. You might want to download the trial and see if you get spoiled. 😉
