I’m looking for a way to boost a low but clean audio signal with audio tools provided in FCP 4.5. I know I was told how but I just can’t recall the ‘how to’ of it. Thanks so much for any help you can offer.

Obviously first step is to turn it’s channels up all the way in the sound mixer. You can also boost the global levels – the two on the right. As this will affect the whole project, you may want to export the clip then pull it in again. This will give you the chance to boost it all over again. Though I’m sure that some of the filters will do the same thing – compressor? 3band EQ all the way up?

I did re-import the original file. I did boost the signal all the way. I’m not sure what you mean about the ‘global level.’ I have also in a limited way tried to fool around with ‘compressor’ and ‘3bandeq’ filters. Those are where I think I might really solve my problem. I can’t seem to get them to work the way I want. I’d love to hear more about how to control those filters. Thanks for your response. Hope to hear more.

There is an audio gain filter. You can turn that baby up as much as you want.

I’m looking at the options I have available in the FCP 4.5 bundle and I don’t see an audio gain filter in either the Final Cut Prod HD or Apple folders. Is there somewhere else that I should look? Has this filter been put into later FCP bundles? Can I download it from somewhere? It sounds like it would be just the ticket for my problem. Thanks.

On my version (6) it’s under the effects folder AUDIO FILTERS -> FINAL CUT PRO -> GAIN

I have no idea when they added it. It’s possible you don’t have it but I would have though this would be a basic, older filter.

If you don’t have it I’m not aware of a way to share filters besides sharing a project that contains it. And since you couldn’t open up a version 6 project that wouldn’t work.

It’s called AU Peak limiter and is in the Apple Audio filters folder.

Another technique (though I think this may only in FCP 6) is to apply normalization gain which you can find in the Modify – Audio Menu.

Download the free audio application Audacity: https://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

Export your original audio, without any additional gain as an .aiff at whatever sample rate & bit depth that’s native to the timeline (probably 48k, 16 bit).

Import that into Audacity & use the gain or compressor (or both) to raise the volume, then use the noise reduction to remove some of hiss or hum that you will also wind up amplifying.

When you save that file, you can re-import it into FCP & use that to replace the original audio in your timeline.

I’d probably try the AU Peak Limiter 1st, then try Audacity if you’re not happy with the results.
