Boost volume without clipping
Hello!
I’m pretty new to Audition and audio editing in general so I don’t really have much clue about what I’m doing. I’m trying to master a 7 second which consists of some background music, a little voice over, and a sound effect at the front for a Twitch.tv streaming channel. This sound will be used as a notification for when someone follows the channel. I’m using a site called Twitch Alerts to inject the audio into the stream. Twitch Alerts has a volume control for the sound but even at 100% it’s not as loud as I need it and my track is hitting right at 0db. I can’t boost the volume on the Twitch Alerts side since it’s just a web application so I need to actually make the track itself louder.
Is it possible to make a tracker louder than 0db without getting horrible clipping sound? I really don’t know how decibels work and what that limit actually is.
I’m using Adobe Audition CC.

Normalize may help you out here – take a look on the Audition help page, scrolling down to Normalize:

With digital audio, 0dB is the upper limit. Normalize, and possibly the Speech Volume Leveler effect may help.

I used Hard Limiter to push the levels to the max without clipping, but it’s still not loud enough. Do you know why 0db is the limit? Why can’t we make audio tracks that are louder than that? Why is it that even though my track is maxing at 0db but I can go to YouTube right now and find videos that are much louder without sounding like they’re clipping? How does a computer know how many decibels something is? Isn’t that relative to the power of the speaker outputting the audio?

You can probably find clips which sound louder on YouTube because they were recorded at a higher input level. dB is a relative measurement for change in level (this could be SPL, or Sound Pressure Level, or electronic signal level). Thanks for the links. I don’t think I’m going to understand this whole 0db limit unless I really spend some time researching it and I don’t have time to do that so I guess it’ll just have to be good enough.
