Boom Mic ?
Hi Everyone,
It’s my first post to the Audio Forum so be gentle. LOL
Here is the background:
We’re doing a 2 day corporate video shoot at 2 different locations.
1 is a private home and 1 is an office.We’re hiring a small production company consisting of 2 guys just to handle the Camera and Audio.
Their demo reel looks good and they are easy to work with.I’m mostly concerned with capturing good audio.
They have an Audio Technica AT897 on a boom.
We’re trying to capture dialog from 1 or 2 people at a time.
We have Shure WL93 lavs but don’t want those seen in the shot.Now for the question:
Would there be a huge difference if I rented a Sennheiser 416?

Yes and no. Does the MKH416 sound better than the AT? Yes, a little. Will it make your end product sound better? Depends on if your audio person knows what they are doing. Audio is 80% skill and about 20% gear. A skilled mixer could obtain killer sound even with my little cheap Audio Technica AT875r.
It won’t hurt to rent a better mic but it won’t necessarily help that much either.

Hello Chuck and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum,
Yes there would be a difference, but there’s another more important issue.
You’ll be inside in normal spaces and not on a sound stage. Because of this you DON’T want a shotgun mic, you want a hypercardioid or supercardioid. Instead of a 416, get a Schoeps cmc641.
Some sound blankets will also come in handy.
And, yes, it sounds way better than an AT 897.
