The Creating Motion Graphics books by the Meyers are the best books on AE money can buy, in my opinion. While they’re not the easiest read, you will learn the program in depth and with unparalelled detail.

Angie Taylor’s books are good as well. For a book to learn by examples, you should check out Mark Christiansen’s “After Effects 6.5 Studio Techniques”.

The latest Classroom in a Book for AE7 looks pretty good for decent tutorials.

Chris and Trish’s books are more valuable when you are comfortable with the basics and want to start really pushing the app.

Antony Bolante’s Visual QuickPro Guide is a good step-by-step when you need a specific tool or individual technique described.
