BNC patch bay for HD?
Posted by Ron Craig on July 9, 2008 at 9:46 pmI read through the recent thread on HD video patch bays and was particularly informed, as usual, by Bob Zelin’s submissions. So I hope he doesn’t yell at me for this question:
Is it not feasible or bad practice or something to use a BNC patch bay for HD video? The SDI connectors are BNC so do I need to convert them to something else just to run them through a patch bay?
I rarely need to patch and un-patch so connector wear isn’t much of an issue. But I suppose there IS an issue that argues against this arrangement; otherwise I would have seen mention of it here. I appreciate any guidance and will now shield my head.

July 9, 2008 at 10:31 pmYou can patch HD with a patch bay – but you really need to be using HD rated components (both the patch bay and the patch cables).

July 9, 2008 at 10:51 pmThanks Aaron. Of course you’re right and I won’t compromise my material for the sake of a few bucks. I just wanted to be sure that BNC simply isn’t good enough for HD. And, frankly, if that’s so I’m just curious as to why.
Cheers,
Ron

July 9, 2008 at 11:13 pmI think you might have BNC and “weco” connectors confused (the long tube things that you use on patch bays). ??
There are certainly BNC connectors and cabling that are HD rated. BNC hasn’t changed form factor, just specs and tolerances. The old 50ohm BNC can’t handle HD… but most 75ohm cables I’ve ever come across handle 1080 4:2:2 just fine.
What kind of things are you trying to patch together?

July 9, 2008 at 11:52 pmHi again Aaron,
The patch bay is BNC, not weco.
This all stems from using the Kona 3 breakout box, which is rack-mounted. On the front it has a lot of SDI/BNC connectors that connect to a multi-cable in back, which in turn connects directly to the Kona 3 card. I have a couple of devices that I want to connect to those breakout box BNCs. Of course, I could just run long BNC cables directly from the devices and bring those cables around to the front of the rack to plug into the breakout box. But I hate that idea. So I would rather connect those devices to the back of my BNC patch bay and then use some short BNC cables in front to connect those devices to the Kona 3 breakout box SDI connections.
Any thoughts?

July 10, 2008 at 12:09 amAh. Well as long as the BNC patch bay has 75ohm connectors, you should be ok. (you can tell by looking into the connector, if it has the white shield that surrounds the copper bit in the middle, it’s 50ohm).
everytime you make a patch, you lose some signal level and other nasties. But 4-6 patches should be just fine. I actually have a similar setup in one of our bay’s and it’s fine for HD. Bob could give you a much better technical response, this is just stuff I’ve picked up as the informal engineer at my studio, so it comes with a small grain of salt.

July 10, 2008 at 12:20 amYes..my BNC connectors in the patch bay are 75 ohm. I’ve got the system a bit disassembled right now (some power supply issue on the Octocore that I’m working on with AppleCare) but I’ll give this a try when I get things back together tomorrow.
Thanks Aaron. And Bob Zelin hasn’t slapped my hand yet!

You won’t have to worry about that. Someone who shall remain nameless didn’t appreciate Bob’s “style” so he’s much more tame now. Personally I miss the old Bob.

July 10, 2008 at 12:51 amHEY WAIT!!
I LIKE Bob Zelin’s style. Obviously you do, too, Walter. And I’ll bet a lot of other people do, too. I was just making a joke about his style — not complaining about it.
I don’t want to go overboard on this but let me be one to say that Bob Zelin brings great intelligence, enormous experience and a style that is –THANKFULLY — not like all the rest of us quiet, moderated, politically-correct clones. Do we all have to be ALIKE to be accepted on this forum? Can’t someone be testing the boundaries? Isn’t life more fun that way??
BRING BACK BOB ZELIN!! I need my hand slapped. (Hmmmmm… maybe that sounds a bit S&M. Or is that still OK to say here?)

Yep, you and a lot of other people “get” Bob and his style. Unfortunately, it was deemed too over the top by someone and now we have the “kindler and gentler” Bob.
I’m sure if you asked why you need a black burst generator, we might get to see a smidgen of the old Bob reappear! 🙂
