    Hi all,

    During some testing with my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, I’m finding that the camera is dropping frames while filming in ProRes 422 HD through very basic use. I have a film shoot for my indie project coming up and am very worried about reliability! Especially since this isn’t even the highest quality codec. Hoping there’s not a problem with my unit specifically.

    I have the ‘stop recording when frames are dropped’ setting switched on, yet the camera does not stop recording or indicate in any way that frames were dropped.

    It’s updated to the latest camera software aka 6.2.1, and I’m filming off of a 1TB Samsung T5 SSD that is on Blackmagic’s list of recommended drives.

    Any help would be much appreciated!

    I have the Samsung T5, and I haven’t come across that problem as yet. Did you format the SSD via the BMPCC menu?

    Other top suspects (before the drive itself) include the cable and the cable connections.

    Hi Kalleheikki,

    I formatted the drive through the camera for exFAT, since I’ll be editing on Windows. I agree with you regarding this possibly being a cable issue, so I made sure the cable connections were solid, and tried using different cables as well. I’m fairly sure I actually ended up testing this on different T5’s, getting the same result, leading me to believe it was a camera issue.

    There was no problems filming still shots or even shots with a bit of camera movement, but I could predictably get the camera to drop frames when using my steadicam.

    Hey Bryce,

    I’ve been noticing I’ve been having the same issue. Everything is the same on my end in terms of hardware (i.e 1TB T5, Prores HD). Typically a clip will drop a fraction of a frame causing the video image to not be in sync with the audio recorded to the clip. I figured out a work around in Premiere by interpreting the footage and assuming the new average frame rate. However, this only works for me because I record my audio externally. Otherwise the footage wouldn’t match the audio recorded to the clip.

    Have you determined the culprit in the matter? Seems like a faulty cable would likely be the cause but you’ve mentioned you already tested that…
