  BMPC-4K as b-cam for use with a RED EPIC

  The German company that produced it wanted to learn if a BMPC-4K could be a viable “B-camera” alongside their RED EPIC.

  IMHO the answer is a resounding, “Yes”.

  The EPIC has slightly more dynamic range, and the BMPC-4K doesn’t have slo-mo capability (other than 30p slowed to 24p or 25p, which actually looks quite nice), but otherwise both cams look great together!

  Note 1: The BMPC-4K costs $3K including its built-in 5″ LCD, SSD recorder & battery. An EPIC costs >$25K with its optional 5″ LCD, SSD recorder, and a battery. Lenses, SSD media, and other accessories cost extra of course!

  Note 2: The BMPC-4K’s CMOS sensor and its global shutter renders motion more naturally than does the EPIC’s CMOS rolling shutter. The BMPC-4K GS records _zero_ jello, skew, or partial frame (flash-band) artifacts. The EPIC’s relatively fast RS results in artifacts, but not as bad as most CMOS cams.

  Note 3: In this comparison, the BMPC-4K is recording 4K ProRes HQ, and the EPIC is recording 4K RED RAW. Both down-scaled to 1080p. Later when BMD releases compressed RAW for the BMPC-4k, the two cams will be even closer. In the comparison, neither cam was color corrected.

  Note 4: Unfortunately, the BMPC-4K can record the extreme highlight of direct sun in the lens as a red dot (visible in the video at the 1:10 point). The Blackmagic pocket cam initially had a “black sun” problem, but with the BMPC-4K it’s a “red sun” (different sensors). BMD fixed this issue on the pocket cam via a free firmware update, so there’s hope they’ll do the same with the BMPC-4K. It’s an unknown at this point. However, for most shoots this isn’t a deal killer.
