BMD Media Express playback volume low
Posted by Jeff Klein on December 5, 2014 at 3:58 amHey folks,
Is there anything that can be done about the extremely low playback volume in Media Express? The level on the meters is fine at around -10dbfs, but is so quiet I have to turn my PC speakers all the way up. If I play the same avi file back in Media Player Classic HT at the same speaker volume setting, it peels my ears back, so it’s obviously something with Media Express. Thanks,

December 5, 2014 at 3:57 pmOf coarse things depend on the input as to what is which options are available. Have you looked at the Blackmagic Design Control; panel? The location of which is also dependent on your os, win/ Mac version.

December 5, 2014 at 9:49 pmHi Russ,
I’m recording on a Win7 Pro HP Z400 via a BMD Decklink card from an ATEM 1 M/E (same happens using the USB 3.0 recording feed as well). The levels coming in as viewed on the Media Express volume meters is -10 to -20 dBFS, and playing back a just-recorded file shows about the same visual level as well, it’s just that the level coming out of the PC speakers is very subdued. Yet if we try it in Media Player Classic HT it’s much louder. We’re recording in MotionJPEG currently.I’ve seen reference here and there complaining of audio issues with Media Express, but it’s usually sync issues, which we don’t have. I was thinking maybe low volume might be another bug, just not as widely reported?
Thanks,

December 6, 2014 at 12:28 amOk, I use intensity pro and record in the dpx format, That said have a look in the windows control panel for the Blackmagic Design Control Panel. If you have it then there is an audio tab that has an output volume control.

December 6, 2014 at 1:34 amUnfortunately, my particular version of BMD Control Panel doesn’t have that tab. However, I believe that any of those settings would only affect playback out of the Decklink card…this issue affects playback within the BMD Media Express program window.
Thanks,

December 6, 2014 at 3:04 amThat really is too bad. Had a Deck link setup once but that was some time ago. As I recall I used to record from inside an NLE which placed the files into the media bin, then I’d review it from there. With that thought, have you considered installing Blackmagic Davinci Resolve 11. There is a free version and it too has a capture feature. I must admit that I’ve been unable to get the capture working in Resolve but then I use Media Express for the capture and review it in Davinci Resolve. You can do basic editing in resolve and it is a state of the art color grading tool. Thats about all I can suggest.

December 6, 2014 at 3:21 amlol, I haven’t had much luck figuring out how to Capture in Davinci Resolve 11 either! I do have high hopes for it, though, the color editing possibilities (which I’m new to) look amazing. I just wish someone would make a tutorial for capturing 🙂

December 6, 2014 at 3:59 amOh, here I thought I was the only person who had difficulty configuring that part of Resolve. I’m certain it’s something simple however it aint broke so I’m not going to mess with it. I do find myself doing more editing in resolve lately and with the added support of ofx plugins, I’m finding fewer reasons to leave Resolve and lately I’m bringing audion back in after it’s been sweetened.
