    Hi,

I’d like to see a blackmagic HDV preset(s) so that you can use multibridge to display the HDV editing results on the monitor. At present, I capture using an adobe HDV preset and then have to load these into a BMD preset so that I can edit and see the results on the monitor.

Maybe I’m being dim though? Anyone else doing HDV using BMD cards have a better solution?

I use the BMD 1920×1080 motionJPEG preset and capture HDV. Then I get realtime HD playback out thru the multibridge. Works a treat!

What would I do without the ‘UNDO’ button!!!!

    Hey guys,

Baz is right (hey Baz, you may remember me from my last company).

In premiere use the native HDV decoding ability in available in premiere for HDV editing. So choose the “decoded” resolution as your project size (most commonly 1920×1080) in the codec of your choice. As Baz suggested, MJPEG works great (good and small), though uncompressed works as well.

If you would like to make a specific project setting for this type of work you can easily make a new project setting (using the Blackmagic HDTV 1920×1080 as a template) and simply change the capture device (and device control) to HDV.

Then you can choose that as a project setting.

Hey Joshua – yeah I remember you and I wont mention the ‘C’ word!

What I also do after I have finished my MotionJPEG edit I then start a new Uncompressed 1920×1080 and import the project and add all graphics etc and then master out to HDCAM.

Doing it this way my HDV MoJpeg renders are less (size and time) than any uncomp renders but all the graphics etc get the full treatment

Cool, thanks guys. When I first got the set up, I did a test, component out of the HDV camcorder (it’s NOT the main use for the system but a little home editing won’t hurt!) capturing uncompressed and HDV capture. There was no question that the HDV capture was better. I’m guessing as it’s stored HDV on the tape you won’t get better and HDV to HDV requires no decoding at all?

So, that’s the solution, a BM based preset with hdv as the capture device – it’s that simple? Then when I want to go back out to the camcorder, how will it go back HDV? Maybe there’s no need – go straight to blu ray?

    Baz,

hehe…no mentioning the ‘C’ word. But that is a great workflow. That way you get to keep all the benefits of the smaller file as well as the benefits of the ucompressed workspace for compositing. Very cool.

    David,

Yup…that’s it. It is that easy. To go back to an HDV camera/deck you will have to recompress the entire timeline as HDV anyways. So prepare yourself for a wait on that.

It would probably be better to go straight to Blu-ray at that point.

David, I have also gone straight from the timeline thru media encoder to Encore 3 and full blu-ray authoring. It was all rather painless and the results were spectacular but I would hate to get you too excited!

All I need now is an easy way to get my HDV finished program out of FCP and into Prem CS3 for HDCAM mastering. Right now going out of FCP as 1920×1080 takes forever AND a s**t load of portable disk space. I might try and see if I can load up a compatible Mac BMD MotionJPEG codec and see if CS3 is happy about it. See, I am pioneering again!

That is where a user chosed mjpeg would be good. The current one just a touch too low in quality – would be great to be able to state a Mb/s level or a simple quality level and let the user choose the balance between dick space usage and quality.

Yup…the ability to set the quality level has been requested.

This is something we would like to implement, but we just don’t have any sort of timeline for it currently.
