bmd drivers in conflict
Posted by Jordan Woods on November 22, 2005 at 6:29 pmI just got a post saying
“HighPoint and Blackmagic driver for OSX 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 doesn’t tango on same system!!!
The highPoint Technologies driver for Mac OSX 10.3.4 (RocketRAID 1820A) and the Blackmagic Design driver, DeckLink 5.1.2 for Mac OS X 10.4 are in conflict.”is there anybody out there that can either confirm or deny this claim… i’m working on it myself but haven’t seen the exact problem yet…
thanks

November 23, 2005 at 12:04 ameven if it were true, you could pick up a Sonnet or Firmtek SATA host card, use your exact same drives, and be back in business for $150 – $290.
These HBA’s don’t conflict with Blackmagic products.bob Zelin

November 23, 2005 at 5:23 amHi Jordan,
I haven’t heard of this before. Are the HighPoint folks stating this or does the report come from somewhere else? Is this report related to PCI-X Macs or PCIe? I’d love to receive some solid information about this in case there is a problem but I don’t believe there is as this is the only report we have received and even you aren’t seeing a problem.

November 23, 2005 at 6:18 pmto clarify, the message that was sent to me was this link, “https://www.xlr8yourmac.com/index.html#S20146”
-what i’m expecting here was a problem that originated somewhere between the chair and the computer, because I haven’t seen this conflict and it doesn’t seem like any of you guys have either… no worries-

November 24, 2005 at 4:28 amHi Jordan,
Thanks for this link and I think the key information here is that the customer was using a PowerMac G4. I haven’t tried using a SATA card in a G4 myself but, based upon customer reports, it appears that there just isn’t another bandwidth in the 33 MHz PCI bus to simultaneously run a SATA card with a DeckLink card. I’ve heard from customers with SATA cards from different vendors and they seem to run OK by themselves but not if both cards are installed simultaneously.
This contrasts with G5’s where SATA and DeckLink cards work fine together and this might be a function of the speed of PCI-X slots and/or because of the independant 133 and 100 MHz buses in the G5’s.
I understand the attraction of making an ultra low cost system using a G4 and a SATA card. However it just doesn’t seem to work well when you add other cards, including DeckLink cards. Cards that do work well together with DeckLink cards in a G4 are the ATTO UL3D and UL3S SCSI cards as well as Fibre Channel cards. I find that you should only run two PCI cards in the G4 when using DeckLink cards. If you try to use a DeckLink, UL3D and Apple Fibre Channel card, the cards just won’t work well. Remove any one of these cards and the G4 will perform well again. So it appears to be a bandwidth issue and G5’s don’t have many of these problems compared with G4’s.
Thanks again for the link.
