My configuration meets all the need from the official BM configuration guide.

I got this ugly “Out of memory” popup all the time.

As I reported in the previous post, what I did were not very big projects. Most of them, less than 2000 shots, 5 or 6 reels. That’s quite common for feature films.
I worked as colorist for more than 10 years, and another 15 years in VFX before I turned in to a colorist. So I have some basic knowledgement about different platforms and softwares, like Windows/Macos/Linux/Irix and Flame/Inferno/Henry/IQ/DF/AE/Cyborg/Haleo/FilmMaster/BaseLight/Lustre/Scratch and some others.
I dont want to invoke a fight here, just want to tell my personal feeling about what I encountered since I use the Resolve.

Resolve, got quite many unique functions which are very effective and helpful for colorist. Like the tracker, the xml integration, the versatile and always up to date on support different digital camera formats, and many others on the list.

But this “out of memory” thing, is the very basic function a film finishing system should implement, and handle well. Did I made the right statement? I started using software grading system 10 years ago, and Resolve is the first and only system I used, which could not handle all the necessary materials in one project. I have to split one feature into two or more projects, that’s quite nonsense, made simple things more complicated.

At least, tell us what’s the limitation of clips number in one project?

how much memory do you have?
The official mac config guide says you’ll need 6, 12, or 24Gb

I have 12G in my machine and have graded features and docs with lots of shots and have never seen this error. Maybe there is a OS or Resolve installation issue? Or a permissions issue?

    Hi Nick,

As Resolve was designed in a DI environment originally the best way to break it down to avoid the memory issues your seeing is to break it down into a project per Reel or 20min chunk.

I’ve been working this way on all feature films I’ve worked on regardless of software and I find clients have no problems at all working this way.

I hope this helps but please do send me a mail at davincihelp@blackmagic-design.com and i’ll do my best to help you further!

    Thanks,

    Dan

I’m also running resolve almost every day for two years now, with 12gb ram and have NEVER seen this pop up.

What is your exact configuration? Seems there maybe something else to blame here.

Well, I have a project that pops this up just after loading it and its only 20 minutes.
The problem is Resolve not USING the memory.
Its a 32 bit app, how would it use more than 3 Gig ?
As soon as you start using EXR files that use quicktime or EXR sequences as mask inputs, say even on two or three video tracks, this will happen.
We got around the problem by splitting the reel into sub reels and deleted two thirds of the files from the video tracks.
It is not how much stuff is loaded to the media pool, its more what is really on the tracks.
So sending the project file wont help as the problem does not show if the actual media is not loaded.
    I could make a video instead…

    Its a fresh 10.6.7/8.1.1 installation.
Smoke/FCP run smoothly on this system.
According to Dan’s reply, I believe its a Resolve limitation.

    Hi Dan,

    Thank you for your explanation.

I dont think one project for each reel is a good setup. It slows down when u need stills from other reels. Of course clients doesnt care about this, but as a colorist, i hate to slow down because of UI design.

Btw, I ALWAYS put ALL the reels in project in any other DI system. Just like I mentioned b4, it speeds up when I need reference between different reels. I just finished a big project with 12 reels, 4000 shots include 1500 vfx, film scans, alexa and epic. Working smoothly, never even think about this memory limitation thing, and of course not on Resolve. Doesn’t want to be offensive, just wanted to express my feeling, that I do not use to be aware of this shots/reels limitation when setup projects. And the idea to put all reels in one projects, fits the human instinct. Which I believe is the basic idea behind the BM/Davinci design.

that sounds like a great feture film Nick!

ps: i am wondering : does Stefan sonnefeld at company 3 divide the project in Reels on Linux because of this ? or is only a MAc Thing ?

i have 24GB and i never had this problem , but have to say that i never had more 1000 shots on the timeline …

Can there be correlation to codecs in use? I pretty much never see this error when working on a single format clean conform project (all R3D, all DPX, all ProRes, etc), but the moment I have mixed formats, things like H264 from the 5D, GoPro, this problem pops up.

I believe you did some deep investigation on this, and what u got make some real sense. I will keep an eye on the issue you mentioned.
