Ah yes, it makes us all wince when we have to render this, no?

I myself am up against it – I have an animation requested by a client who wants a device that has a hose with a blurry transparency to it. The floor on which it sits is highly reflective but is a blurry reflection.

Does anyone know any tricks or advice to get something rendered within in an acceptable amount of time using the blurry transparency and reflections without it looking like a noise pattern? Or is my only choice to up my samples?

    Using R20.

    Cheers,
    Brian

If you can get away with it with your particular scene setup:
Add a completely reflective material to a sphere and bake out a spherical mapped texture, blur it in PS and then use the result as your reflection map on that surface.
