  • Blurry image using effect with Shape Mask

    Hello,

I always had this problem since I use FCPX’s color grading tools and I always found an alternative but not this time…
I’m editing a wedding video and the bride was underexposed so I had to fix that before applying my LUT. I used the color wheels (or color board) with a Shape Mask to only increase exposure in the center but each time I used a Shape Mask, the image becomes a bit blurry. And more effects I add, blurrier the image is.

I don’t have this problem if the Shape Mask is applied to the last effect but in this situation, I need it on the first effect of the list.

Someone already had this problem and solved it? Or maybe I’m doing things in the wrong way…
(I hope all is clear, sorry if my message contains a lot of mistakes, I don’t speak english ☺)

Can you show a picture of the mask in the FCPX viewer?

The mask in the effects board or the shape on the image?

I have experienced this too and thought I was going crazy. It’s been awhile since I ran across it. Pretty sure I was on 10.4.3 (maybe .2). In my instance, I was editing a 1080 clip into a 720 sequence and scaling the image a little bit. I was also working with a multicam clip, but tested it with the original clip and finally concluded it was related to masks. And I think, in my case, it was related to the Sharpen effect and its interaction with masks. If memory serves, I think I fixed it by reordering my effects (possibly putting Sharpen last?).

Anyway, sorry to not be more help other than I can validate that I’ve seen this before, and it seemed inconsistent (i.e., happening in some sequences, but not others, yet all of the clips were from the same shoot).

For me, it happens with every sequence, no matter scaling, frame rate or something else…
At first, I also thought it was the Sharpen effect but I deleted and the problem is still here.
It happens each time I use a Shape Mask on an effect situated at the beginning of the list. Like you said, if I reorder my effects and put the one with the shape mask at the end, no problem!

But now, I really need my effect with Mask at the beginning, before applying my LUT… I don’t understand why this problem exists and what I can do…

What if you apply a color board effect but not actually change anything, and then add the mask as a second effect? Would that work around the issue?

Or maybe change one little tiny thing like saturation by 1 point in the first color effect before applying the mask as the second effect?
