  • blurring out a license plate in motion

    Hello,

I can’t figure out how to blur just the license plate on a car as it drives away in my shot. The location of the plate changes on the screen as the shot progresses. Is there an easy way to do this?

    Thanks a bunch,

    Paul

You can do it in Motion. Motion 3 has tracking ability that can track the plate wherever it goes.

    Paul,

In FCP it is harder to do than say in Motion or After Effects, but it can be done. Without keyframing this manually you’d need some kind of tracker, I believe CHV makes a pretty good one.

Joes filters have a plug to blur or pixilate these things, but then you need to animate (track) it to the shot.

Or you can just duplicate the shot over itself, and use a garbage matt to isolate the plate, add blur or whatever but you’d still have to keyframe the size and position of the matte through the shot.

    Have a wonderful day.

Andy Mees has a great filter…free…called REGION BLUR 3. Just keyframe it and you are set:

    How I blur stuff in a nutshell…

    1. duplicate your video layer and blur the layer underneath.
    2. track the top layer license plate with analyze motion
    3. Cut a matte to remove the license plate so you see through to the blurred layer
    4. apply a match move to the matte and use the tracking data from the analyze motion effect as the source.

I’ve since given up on Motion and started using Mokey to track and cut mattes that I bring back into FCP.. better tracking and fewer crashes for me.
