  • Bluring background on clip?

Okay, so I have shot this for a client (https://www.macvilleproductions.com/giving.mov) but now the church which my client is giving this video to has said they do not like the boat in the background and would like to blur it. I have already added a heavy vignette to put more of the focus on the talent. But, I would like blur the background if at all possible. I know that it would be fairly easy to create a motion mask if it wasn’t a dolly shot (as the talent would be the only item moving.) But does anyone have any creative ways to create a mask without too much trouble, or some other way to make the boat less noticeable?

    Thanks,

My first reaction was “what boat?” Oh, that boat. Don’t know what they’re complaining about …

Just draw a mask on an adjustment layer and animate the mask’s shape so it slides with the talent. Pretty simple. Feather and invert the mask and apply some blur to the adjustment layer.

Yeah, a tight mask would be better.

But it’s a lot of work. Do what you can get away with.

Tell the client that, yes, anything can be done on the computer … if you have enough time and money. 😉

You may be able to motion track the boat and parent the mask to the tracker data. Even if it’s not a perfect match, it would be easier to just have to make adjustments to the mask on a frame by frame basis after it was tracked.

Okay, I used the first suggestion (which is what I was going to do originally, but couldn’t think how to do it) and got this result: https://www.macvilleproductions.com/givingblur.mov

I think it’s pretty good considering what I’m having to do. It’s manual mask with keyframes every 1-5 seconds.

What do you all think? It’s going to be shown in a big church on Plasmas and LCD projectors, so I think it’ll almost be un noticeable.
