Hey Edit Gurus, I need a hand with this one.

Shooting a project tomorrow, that involves industrial machinery. The client wants his product to be the focus of attention, and not show machines from other vendors. I’d like to blur or mask the background to hide the rest of the plant. Any quick ideas? I plan on editing the project in Vegas, but I also have the Adobe line of products as well as FCP.

    thanks

Two choices. Either shoot it that way (using depth of field) or in post, you can use two copies of the same video, put a cookie cutter and then blur on upper track, and let lower track reveal the product.
Usually easier to shoot with DOF, but maybe not. The “COPS” effect is fast and easy to do in post. The less camera/subject movement, the less keyframing you’ll have to do.

Try to increase depth of Field on sit by going far with the tripod and shooting in TELE. If you still need to do something afetrwards, as well as duplicating layers and masking one (as described above), you could try TIFFEN DFX filters for Final Cut that do the same but better and faster
