    I’m going through the AE Magic 6.5 book, and it has a tutorial where you create text, using the text tool directly, It creates its own solid. Then I have to mask each letter, and blur each letter separately. However, the blur effect doesn’t work on text created this way, I can only get the blur effect to work on text created using the Effect>Basic text effect on a solid. Am I doing something wrong or is there a step I am skipping? I would appreciate any direction on this…it would be very convenient to just create the text and blur it the way the book suggests…

    You should be able to do this without any hassles. You may want to make sure that you are not using OpenGL preview. You should be able to blur on a text layer without rasterizing it.
