    Hello,

We’re just about to purchase a Z1 as an in house upgrade for our PD150. We have a job coming up that will require a large amount of blue screen effects. We would normally hire in a DigiBeta for this, as DV doesn’t yield the best results due to the colour space. I know there are keyers for working with DV but I’ve had no experience of using them, are there any decent 3rd party plug in keyers for AFX/FCP specifically designed to work with HDV footage? And has anyone had any experience of using the Z1 for blue/green screen work?

    Thanks in advance

Nothing beats uncompressed. If you have a lot of blue screen either go uncompressed HD or DigiBeta.

Even uncompressed HDCAM is hard to key – best bet is to capture uncompressed 4:2:2 HD over HD SDI direct off the camera head itself and key from that.

The other thing to do, is if you’re just ending up with SD, is to key with your HDV as best as you can, and when you reduce it’s size to SD, that should make things look a lot better, or indeed, in AE, downsample your HDV to SD size and then key – either way it should work good. But to key HDV and leave it at HD rez is probably a recipe for disaster.
