    To those who know…

    Set up:

I have a shoot that requires blue-screening and I am wondering if it would be difficult to edit in FCP…actually not much editing, but combining raw footage (footage shot with blue screen) with Video shot to fill in the blues screen.

I know that I should measure my distance and height and shoot in proportion for both live action and blue screen footage.

    Question:

    1. is it difficult to do post work with blue screen in FCP

    2. what is the process that one should follow when doing this procedure

    3. any tips that you could mention – either while shooting or in post

    thanks for your help.

You can search here for hundreds of posts on blue and green screen shooting. heck, you can find everything you need to know from a few hours on google.

Your single most crucial factor: Lighting the blue.
Second: Shoot on the set, caputre yoru footage, practice using the keyers.
third: Have a backup plan. Your camera may not shoot footage in a codec appropriate for the stock keyers. You may need to rent a better camera or acquire additional keying tools.

I know that I should measure my distance and height and shoot in proportion for both live action and blue screen footage.

I don’t know what you mean by measuring stuff, never heard of that being necessary unless you’re trying to track a camera in 3d space. That’s an entirely different set of discussions.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I just had to pull a key on footage shot in Sony XDCAM-HD format, 1080p. I can’t believe how easy it was to pull the key using the plugin from DV Garage in FCP. I’m sure I’m a little easier to please than most… as this is just for web delivery, but the key is VERY clean to my eyes and took me about 5 minutes.

I don’t work for the company or own stock in them, I just own their product.

Oh, and the footage was shot using a reflecmedia setup, that probably matters…

dvmatte pro studio… non-nodal. I was pleasantly surprised, really. I’m used to a 30 minute key process that still gives just adequate results. This was a breath of fresh air.

Ya, the reflecmedia is the LED light ring setup with the reflective backdrop. Again, my needs are probably simpler than most, but it works great for me.

You might want to test by downloading a sample I shot with Reflecmedia. It’s just HDV footage, but it gives you a good idea of how it works. https://www.dvcreators.net/chroma-key-in-hd/
The footage is at the bottom, there’s also a little quicktime movie showing the steps to key in FCP.
