Blu-Ray Workflow
Posted by Jonathan Gentry on September 5, 2009 at 1:22 amI am producing a wedding video shot in 60i on Canon HV20/A1 cameras.
I am trying to deliver this in blu-ray.
I am using cineform codec to get the best quality and allow me to push the colors in post.
I need someone to help me with a workflow that will produce the best quality blu-ray output when it comes to project settings in Vegas/Render settings in Vegas/Project settings in DVDA.
Thanks alot!

Depending on your resolution, you will choose the Blu-Ray or HDV template for rendering. On the last tab of the template, make sure video quality is set to Best.
Ofcourse, you need to render audio separately using the Dolby Digital AC3 template.

September 5, 2009 at 3:54 pmWhat about the choice to run interlace or progressive? I would assume if I shot in 60i I can keep it interlaced all the way throught the workflow to the DVD. If so I would assume I would want 1080i format (1920x1080i?)
Conversly if I wanted to switch from 60i to 30p or even 24p at what step would it be best to switch to progressive? These are the choices:
1. Initial Capture (to Cineform.)
2. Through the project settings in Vegas.
3. Upon render.
4. When encoding to blu-ray-Jonathan

September 5, 2009 at 4:12 pmLet me also say that an issue I’m having is that I’m trying to keep everything interlaced all the way to the blu-ray disc. I’m exporting from Vegas at 1920×1080 and keeping those settings in the burn process in DVDA. When I view the video using PowerDVD9 on the PC I see black lines running through the footage. The menu looks and functions great.

September 6, 2009 at 1:04 amI really don’t know about switching to 30p.
But I recently kept interlaced all the way through the burn, downloaded a trial version of Cyberlink powerdvd and it looked beautiful!
I capture with AVCHD, decompress it with UpShift program and use the templates I describe.

I thought the Canon’s were HDV cameras? HDV is 1440x1080i PAR 1.3333. I would set my project and all of my renders to match the HDV source.

Is PowerDVD9 deinterlacing the footage properly? The only way to really check quality is to burn a Blu-ray disc and watch it on an HDTV. It doesn’t matter what it looks like on a PC if your final destination is Blu-ray/HDTV.

I would switch on initial capture to Cineform. Then keep your entire workflow 24p so that any titles, generated media, transitions, etc. are all done at 24p. This will give you the most accurate editing experience with no surprises.

September 6, 2009 at 3:18 pmI think the HV20 is 1920×1080 and the A1 is 1440×1080 (from memory.)
The black lines were caused by me not understanding proper workflow. I was rendering to cineform and that didn’t make sense. I’m now rendering from Vegas to mpeg2 and that means I don’t need to recompress in DVDA. Everything is looking good, testing on PS3 now.
