Blu-ray workflow confusion

I am a little confused with a few things, and will try to keep this short.

First of all, I am shooting Canon60D 1920/1080 29.97 progressive. Converting via MPEG Streamclip to ProRes LT 1920/1080 29.97 upper field first (interlaced scaling and deinterlace video unchecked). Editing in Final Cut Pro 7 on ProRes LT timeline 1920/1080 29.97 progressive.

Then I want to make a Blu-ray in Encore, so using Compressor I export to 18mbps MPEG2 1920/1080 29.97 progressive.

Problem is, when imported into Encore, the Blu-ray Transcode Status is “untranscoded”. According to forums.adobe.com/message/1901666 Encore does not support this flavor of Blu-ray. My option, if I want to keep the Blu-ray Transcode Status at “don’t transcode”, I have to comply with one of these items. So my option then would be to encode in Compressor 1920/1080 29.97 interlaced, right?

My biggest question is, is there any effect on the video in changing back to interlaced? My next question is, are there any “holes” in my workflow…things that I am doing wrong…that both affect my final video quality, as well as from a time/efficiency standpoint? I am using Encore CS5.1

casey,
there are some lacks in your workflow….

1. canon is shooting H264-movies. conversion via streamclip to PRO RES or HQ is good, but LT is NO GOOD.

2. transcoding to MPEG2(HD) will give give you loose of quality (2nd generation), to go H264 will be better as it´s the better codec.

note: there is no possibility to rewrap or unwrap H264-quicktime to BD-spec-h264.

3. blu-ray spec supports:
1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080i50 or 1080i29.98, so you need to go 1080i29.98, what is called 1080psf29.98 in your case, means progressive footage in an interlaced sequenz (you wont loose any quality).

to keep the specs in place, the most easy way would be using compressor-setting with 1080i29.98 – that means upper field first.

Hi Daniel,

can you tell what compressor settings aply to create a valid h264 stream for use in encore with no new encore transcoding?

It´s perfect the use of 25p footage in a 50i stream too for pal users like me. No loose of any quality.

Olá Jose,
you if you use compressor 3.5 (I guess) that came with FCP7, you´ll find a specific blu-ray H264-setting within the setting-area on the left bottom side.

you should better create your own preset instead of using apple presets.

if your source is 25p you need to choose 1080i50-setting, meaning compresor will create a 1080psf25-video, as 1080p25 is not part of the BD-specs.

if you must stay progressive you need to slow down your video using apple cinema-tools or the compressor conforming-option.

Hi Danny,

all seems to work fine, but i´m surprised with the amount of time spend in compressor task.

Footage and time line are xdcam422hd 25p export as it, in fcp 10,0,7 in .mov container

Apply compressor settings for these seven mov movies, from two minutes to twelve, total movie time one hour. Make m2v and ac3 its fast, apply qmaster to use all proccessor capable… but h264 take about 24 hours… I don´t think these are normal times.

Make with encore from bd autory, takes about 8 hour for a 2 hour movie…

Any idea on what i´m doing wrong?

Or only wrong it´s my oppinion about time to make works…
