Blu-Ray region free
We finished a 145 mins. documentary on 720p30 and need to deliver a Blu_ray for worldwide distribution. As I looked into possibilities to create a region free Blu-Ray (which resolves the frame rate problem as Europe uses 720p25) I just found lots of articles regarding capabilities of Blu-Ray Players to reproduce both but no info about creating a region free Blu-Ray in the first place. Also are there calculators that show how much disc space is needed for a 145 mins. production to keep the quality of 720p as Blu-Ray offers 25 and 50 GB. Any input would be highly appreciated, thanks. Jurgen

I haven’t had a lot of experience with Blu-ray authoring yet but I get the sense that they are region-free by default and you need to actually make the decision to regionize them. So far I’ve only seen a handful of discs with region encoding- on a couple of Disney movies we bought in France. Other than that it seems like they are largely without region. Clearly you don’t see a notation of region on most Blu-ray packages.

There are only 3 regions in BD – A, B, C and these are controlled in the authoring tool How do you plan to author this disc? You might do some research before driving in too deep! You are limited in tools if you plan to distribute widely. Only specialist are involved in Blu Ray authoring for distribution.

Well, I just wonder how it works with the different frame rates then. As Blu-Ray region A1 (USA) uses 29.97 and region B Europe 25fps. Obviously the movie industry starts from 24fps, so how they are able to create region free Blu-Rays? For sure, there is somewhere a simple answer.

As the Blu-Ray will be a commercial product it has to be done by a licensed Blu-Ray authoring facility. That’s all ok. I just try to understand how it works with Blu-ray.

Hi Jurgen I hope you’re having luck with your documentary, I hope I can be of help with this information.
I used a customized Blu-ray data rate calculator I wrote up for my company at New Element Productions (Los Angeles). If your film is 145 minutes, to make it fit on a single layer BD 25, encoding at 28,939 data rate will give you the best quality and fit, leaving room for a few still menus or short logos. Your film will look great doing a 2 pass encode with a high quality encoder such as with one we have here. If you want the best quality however encode at 40,761 but that will be for a dual layer BD 50. This is all considering you have maybe 1 or 2 short logos and .ac3 compressed audio, and not a lot of features on the disc. If you do, another calculation will need to be made for the film and all other assets to ensure the highest quality for the disc space available. Also I suggest using VC-! encoder instead of Mpeg2, as it offers superior quality, we use that here at my company as well.
