Blu Ray media?
Posted by Chris Evans on November 21, 2012 at 3:23 pmAm going to buy a bluray writer to burn some of my projects to, so I can share easily with family and friends.
Was thinking of getting one of the LG burners, which seem well reviewed and are a good price.
Can anyone recommend any cheap reliable media that will work well for me?

I would strongly recommend going with the Pioneer BDR-208. I have owned nothing but Pioneer burners for the past 12 years and they are very well made and just last, and last. You can pick it up for $75 USD at VideoGuys.com.

You said it Steve. Pick one, cheap or reliable. Media is NOT the place to skimp. This is what will be holding you memories forever, or until the media fails.
I would stick with the high-end lines of companies like Verbatim, Ritek, and Taiyo Yuden, and steer clear of companies like Memorex, Maxell, or anything with “Value” in the name. You can get White Ink Jet Printable Verbatim’s in packs of 50 for $1.46 each.

November 21, 2012 at 4:55 pmThanks. I can’t see many suppliers of the Pioneer BDR-208 here in the UK but the BDR-207 seems widely available and similar price to the LG I was looking at. Is the BDR-207 good?
As for the media, how’s Panasonic. Found a pretty good deal on 10 packs.

Yes, that’s the one I have. 🙂 The 208 is the brand new one which is why it’s availability is probably limited. The BDR-207 rocks!

I’ve never tried them and they may actually be branded Panasonic but in reality they are made by someone else. This is one of those times when you have to look at the core competence of the company. Is Panasonic known for their media? Is Verbatim known for their media (hint: that’s all Verbatim does). I would personally stick with media manufacturers but that’s just me.
It’s like the early days of digital cameras and people would ask me, “I saw a good deal on a digital camera by HP, should I buy it?” and I’d ask them, who would you rather buy a camera from, a printer manufacturer or a camera manufacturer? Then I’d tell them to get an Olympus (which was a very good brand in it’s day and an early pioneer of digital photography)

November 21, 2012 at 7:41 pmI would say stick with Verbatim, since they are probably easier
for you to locate. Forget Panasonic.Steve Rhoden

Yea, I was reading that too. Some people were saying it didn’t work well with older burners. Other say they went back to the nont LTH version and have had no problems so I would try and find non-LTH discs.
This is what I buy:
Verbatim (97339) Blu-ray Media Disc (BD-R Disc) 6X 25GB White Inkjet Hub
I don’t know if they ship to the UK.
