I will be creating a number of hour-long “nature-absorption” videos using FCP. These will be accompanied by 5.1 surround sound.

I desire to make Blu Ray discs of each production suitable for use as masters for replication. What software should I use for authoring? Is Adobe Encore CS5 up to snuff? Will it allow me to create nice-looking navigation interfaces?

Also, I will need to include a use-selected option to view subtitles, which will be identifications of species (birds, frogs, plants, insects) when they first appear in a particular video. It is important that the viewer be able to disable the subtitles (the default will actually be no-subtitles).

If necessary, I would be willing to buy a PC in order to use software other than Encore for Mac. I understand the FCP is very limited for mastering, and so is Toast. Earlier posts indicated that Encore wasn’t that good either. Has this situation changed over the last few months?

Unfortunately your only choice here would be Do Studio. Do Studio is a fantastic tool but your still looking at initial start up cost of around 5-6K and alot of homework before your title can be ready for replication. Doesn’t make sense with numbers like these to go it alone…do yourself a favor and hire someone who does this kind of work. If you provide your email, Id be more than happy to offer some more advice.

I agree with Eric that DoStudio for PC is a step up from Encore, but with multi-page popup menus it has come a long way with CS5. And BluStreak Premaster has been creating replicated discs from Encore projects for well over a year now, at a reasonable cost for our software.
