    Hi all,

I’m currently trying to research the best way to output blu-ray video through a Macintosh workflow. I’m using FCS 2 and based on what I’ve read, will be purchasing an external firewire blu-ray burner.

Based from what I’ve been reading in forums, the only way to author blu-ray discs with customized menus is by using Adobe Encore CS4.

    FCS – Encore workflow:
    -from FCP, export using Compressor
-Compressor exports video file using MPEG-2>Elementary Stream>stream usage:Blu-Ray
-Compressor exports audio file using Audio>Dolby Digital professional (Auto)>Target System:AC-3
-Import files in Encore and burn to Blu-ray
(this workflow came from a blog and I am just referencing it)

Can anyone suggest a better workflow then this one?

Any suggestions regarding a reliable external blu-ray burner for Macintosh?

The link to the above workflow is:

    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Dennis,
Make a search in the forum.
    W. Biscardi explained his workflow just two or three days ago.
I think is the same than yours, but burning with Toast.

Encore does not work with anything other than “Play Only” buttons. If you want reliable blu-ray discs with custom menus, purchase DoStudio from NetBlender. In fact they just came out with a full blu-ray workflow that includes an encoder.

Yep, it runs on Windows, so we have an HP Workstation in our shop just for BluRay Disc.

Cut in FCP, Export a Self Contained Quicktime Movie, take it to DoStudio for everything else.

for a lower cost option, DVDITPRO HD also produces
Blu-Ray discs with reliable menu buttons, but
you have to prepare all assets in advance like DoStudio.

    Hi Walter,

Thank you for your quick response, i think for now I will give up on attempting to create fully customized blu-ray discs, mainly because I can’t really afford to spend the amount of time on Encore, having read more posts that seem to point to a conclusion that Encore simply is not a good solution for blu-ray authoring.
I’ll stick to Mac because I don’t want to invest on a PC system.

I would like to ask if you would have any suggestions for a reliable external blu-ray firewire burner for Mac systems?
For now I will simply stick with the blu-ray authoring capability of toast 10, at least until a better blu-ray solutions comes out for Mac.

Disappointing that FCS still hasn’t said anything about blu-ray authoring.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the suggestion, I’m afraid at the moment I can’t switch to a PC workflow.

FastMac.com is where i purchased our internal burner for the Mac Pro, I believe they also sell an external burner.

As for not being able to afford a PC system, sad to say it only cost me $1,500 for a very high end HP Workstation with 4GB RAM, BluRay Burner and a host of other bells and whistles. It’s quite cheap to set up a Windows workstation these days as those latest PC ads are highlighting.

A Mac Pro with everything set up the same would have been a minimum $3,500 investment, probably more.
