Here’s the deal: I’ve got this bright white background, a nicely chromakeyed person on top of that but the edges look fake. In camera the bright background would bloom over the edges of the person but how do I recreate this natural phenomena in FCP? I checked out Edgeflash in the Sapphire plugin and it does the trick, but it’s way too expensive. Is there a lowlevel trick to it?

Thanks for that tutorial link… I think I’m gonna put that concept to use in After Effects.

Not sure if this would work like I think, but:
1- Put the BG on top of the FG. That’s right, we’re working backwards!
2- set the composite mode of the BG to “Track Matte Alpha”
3- Use the Gaussan Blur to blur only the alpha of the GB layer.

DV Matte has a feature that allows you to blend the background into the foreground with a few sliders to fine tune the effect. It will generate a kind of a light wrap from the background into the foreground that sounds like it will do what you are describing. I’ve used it a few times to take the edge off of a composite and , if you take it a little farther than normal, it will add a kind of backlight effect to your foreground layer.
You used to be able to download a trial version from DV Garage. I’m not sure if they still offer that, but it night be worth looking into.
