Ok guys I’m having a tough time with something and since I’m a newbie, the question might be an easy one.

Comp 1: a bunch of letters masking a solid with a 4-gradient effect, effectively producing a word with a gradient fill.

Comp 2: the previous comp blended (mode: add) on top of a black solid layer with a path with an animated vegas effect turned on. end result: as the vegas effect draws a bunch of black lines close to each other, the word on top appears (since their blending mode is add and the lines are black). also there is a white solid layer beneath all this.

Problem comes with the third comp. Imagine I want to insert this little animated logo on top of a picture that does not have a white background. when i place the layer in this new comp and scale it down, comp 2 retains the white background and i don’t want that. with blend modes i can’t seem to get rid of that white background without messing the colours of the letters.

i thought it would be easy to solve by going to comp 2 and deleting the white solid “background” layer, but when i do this i somehow lose the “add” blend mode effect of the letters. they just pop out regardless of wether the black lines underneath have been drawn or not…

if this made any sense at all, please tell me, how do i get rid of the white solid background of comp 2 without screwing up the rest of the work…

    best regards,

Hmm, a small update. I applied a Color Key effect pointing to white on that last Comp and it seems to work… But I get the feeling that this isn’t the right way to do it. It feels like I’m complicating.

If I understand what you’re doing, I had to read over it a few times :), I would recommend using the black solid with the vegas effect as an Alpha Track matte for the text. Leave the text on the ‘Normal’ blend mode.

If you want it to be additive in the final composition then change Comp 2’s blend mode to ‘Add’ in Comp 3.
