  • Blade Tool Inaccuracy ?

Posted by Neil Goodman on July 18, 2011 at 2:54 pm

Just attempted my first project in FCP X. Nothing crazy just a talking head interview with music, broll and few graphics.

Everything went as expected for the most part but ive found the blade tool to be wildly inaccurate. Doent seem to adhere to where the playhead is positioned and sometimes dropped cuts a couple frames to the left of it, or a couple frames to the right, very unpredictable. Selecting a clip and using Command B seems to work like it should if im zoomed into the clip enough but adds that extra step of zooming in, selecting the clip and then the keystroke. Id like to be able to just hit B when i need to and drop the cut on the fly. Anyone else seeing this, or is there something to the blade rtool im not getting ?

It might be because of the skimming tool which takes a bit of getting used to and might be fighting with you here – try turning it off (hit S) so you can park accurately where you want.

    Hi Neil,

Did you turn on snapping (shortcut: N) when you were using the Blade tool?

    Kind regards,

Try using Cmd-B instead of invoking the Blade Tool – or better still do what I’ve done and map “Blade” onto the B key.

I’ve never understood the point of invoking a different mode for such a basic editing operation.

    I had the snapping on.

I did use Command B and it qworked but like said, i have to zoom in, and then select the clip, then hit Command B.

I just want to able to hit B, have the blade tool activate, and then click exactly where the i need the cut, but it seems like it will drop that cut a frame or two every single time. Surely this has to be a bug, unless im not getting it.

    Niel,

I was playing around with the blade tool and it does seem that being zoomed in is a bit better.

I think what you might be noticing is how precise the tool actually is.

Since FCP X let’s you subframe audio edit it might infact be that you are on the Video side of a precise audio subframe.

If you look at the blade tool while you are using it, you will notice a subtle thing. It lays a shadow on either side of the blade.

Turn on TC and go to a frame with snapping on, then make a blade edit an see if it is cutting on teh frame you are asking it to.

That blade is really sharp, go slow with it. 🙂

im not in front of the computer at the moment, but your saying the blade will take the audio into consideration as far as frames , before the video ? hmmm.

and i did notice the grey bar to either side but like i said, it was very unpredictable and sometimes dropped cuts sometimes in that grey area and sometimes not.

I’m saying that perhaps depending on factors such as; the zoom level and whether a clips audio and video are split, could affect whether you are subframe editing.

Skimming might have something to do with it as well.
Not sure, just trying things out.

Are you using the keyboard to do the final adjustment to where you want the cut to made…

From my experience or lack of knowledge using the keyboard to find the exact frame you want to cut is not possible..

I might be wrong.. Is there a way to execute the cut to where the blade tools skimmer head is and not where the position of the mouse blade is?

    waov this hard to explain…

Okay try this take a random leave the player head a couple of frames in to the clip press “b” for blade tool… now with the mouse move the blade skimmer to the middle of the clip, take your hand of the mouse and now only use the keyboard. With the keyboard move the blade tools skimmer 10-20 frames further.

If you know press CMD-B the blade tool will make the cut where you left your mouse hanging..

I find this very odd is there a work around for this? and form what I’m hearing here is that the same problem mentioned in the begin of this thread?
