Blackmagic Intensity and Avid
Posted by Steve Pankow on September 12, 2006 at 5:11 pmSo what does the release of this new board mean to Avid? Another nail in the coffin or just more smoke and mirrors from the HDV crowd?

September 12, 2006 at 9:05 pmHI editz,
very interesting product. They’ll probably sell loads as it offers a very cost effective solution for **reasonable** uncomp’HD monitoring. The ability to capture Uncomp’HD at that pricepoint (when used with one of the new sony camcorders) is unreal, however it’s real world usefullness is severly hampered by the hardware still required to record the data. I guess a lot will depend on just how good BMDs Jpeg codecs are.
Suggestion for a cool device>>
firestore type product with HDMI input, able to record material with AvidDNHD codec (data rate shouldn’t be a problem). That would sell by the truckload surely?

September 13, 2006 at 1:12 amI haven’t kept up with the whole Avid codec issue. Is it something they intend to keep to themselves or make available to other hardware manufacturers?

I dunno about that, but I think that Avid should become a lot more open about its solutions, otherwise BMD and AJA will rule the world shortly. Interesting to note the Both Avid and Discreet are now buying in capture solutions from AJA. I really like the idea of software MC that could be used with BMD and or AJA hardware.
If memory serves DNxHD is circa 50mbs which seems to me a smart place to be with a compressed HD codec.

September 14, 2006 at 12:09 amAmi I missing something? Which “low cost” aka “consumer/prosumer” camcorders offer HDMI out? I should go re-read :-\

September 14, 2006 at 8:23 amHi Bill,
Check out Sony’s new consumer HDV camcorder, the first of many with HDMI out. low cost, high quality mini studio output is tantalisingly close….

September 14, 2006 at 10:23 amWell it’s certainly not the Z1, which I wouldn’t classify as new anyway. Are you talking about that little diddy that uses CMOS chips? Forgot the model #.

September 15, 2006 at 3:48 amActually, Avid has made DNxHD available for any manufacturer to use. I believe it is open source. Ikegami has the codec built into they’re HD Editcam cameras.
It’s a real shame AJA and BMD aren’t utilizing the DNxHD codec…it’s amazing quality for the file size.
Also, if AJA and BMD where smart they’d get .mxf compatible and they could sell capture boards across the entire Avid line and other manufacturers that support the new format.
BTW, the bit rate varies for DNxHD…at the high end it’s 220 mbps and they’re coming out with a low-end 36(ish) mbps compression.
