April 10, 2018 at 4:50 pmI really loved the specs for the pocket cinema camera 4K, except for one thing. I searched high and low online hoping to find that the screen came out and articulated/rotated like on the GH5. May sound crazy but it’s a huge help having something like that when trying to get certain angled shots while maintaining a visual of the screen.

I think they want you to buy the Blackmagic Video Assist… which, for $495 USD still brings the package in around $2,000 (including taxes). Not bad for a 10/12bit camera + recorder/monitor.

April 10, 2018 at 6:40 pm[Shawn Miller] “I think I would prefer a dedicated Fusion in those cases.”
Yes, I completely agree, as do most long time users of Fusion.
One rather telling thing is that Primatte is no longer in the toolset apparently because of licensing issues. Is that a clue? I do rather get the feeling that the standalone application is now suddenly history.
One comment I read today on WeSuckLess amused me a lot:
The biggest problem with this development is that BM seriously messed up the way they announced it. Not mentioning classic Fusion at all was a huge mistake. Assuming it will still exist outside Resolve, they should have talked about the number of new users who would see the benefits of Fusion and then want to try the “full” Fusion as well as the advantage to third party developers who would have a larger customer base of Resolve users to sell their add-ons to.
Remind you of anything!?
I have to say I’m surprised at how BMD have handled this. But then major change is always a tricky sell.

April 10, 2018 at 6:58 pmThe screen is fixed on the Pocket Cinema 4K camera. It does not articulate nor does it swing out.

April 10, 2018 at 7:09 pmIt Ppears the stand alone version of Fusion will still exist, at least over the short term. For some reason you cannot have clips stacked on top of each other show up in the Fusion page. Granted, this is a beta version but it looks like a single clip instance scenario for now. I could be missing something or not have a firm understanding of how this works. Will any third part OFX such as Sapphire show up in the Fusion page? This still looks interesting and many questions remain.
As it stands now I really don’t see people quitting their CC subscription in mass numbers. Remember this new version is in beta and more work needs to be done. It is a step forward but is it in the right direction?

Well… that is troubling! Note to self, “do not lose Fusion dongle”.

That does give me a slight sinking feeling. ☺ OTOH, BMD does listen… you might have to scream at them for a year or two, but they do listen. ☺ I just hope we’re not walking into an Apple/Autodesk style public execution of a powerful node based compositing application. I don’t think BMD will do that… but stranger things have happened.

True enough!

That’s an easy one.
Stack up as many clips as you want, select them all, right click and choose New Fusion Clip. Select the Fusion page and your stacked clips will appear in a ready made Fusion composition.

April 11, 2018 at 7:36 amSome solid improvements to the Fairlight page and super excited that Fusion is now integrated as well. There was one little comment that Grant Petty made during the NAB presentation about being able to open old Fusion and Fairlight projects in Resolve. This, plus the new hardware controllers are important steps.
Once again Blackmagic is surging at a pace. I did think this might be the release that brought ProRes encoding to Windows and Linux and maybe at least a mention of ProResRAW intentions.

Let’s not forget that Prores raw is an acquisition codec and BM have their own compressed DNG acquisition codec that’s bitwise (14 vs 12) superior to Prores Raw, as does every other high and mid range camera manufacturer. But yeah I see them all supporting it at some point because it’ll probably be optimized for FCPX. As far as the new 4k Pocket Cinema camera, probably down the line but their CDNG codec is likely better and more attractive to them because it’s free. It’ll make it into the BMPCC and Resolve (and PrPro) when the cameras start supporting it and if it’s performance as an editing codec is demonstrated on non-Apple boxes to be very good.

April 11, 2018 at 3:39 pmApparently there will be two flavors of fusion, I got this from the bm forum.
When I asked whether Fusion was end of life as a standalone product, Blackmagic USA President Dan May clarified. Resolve 15 will not include the entire feature set of Fusion. Rather, as Dan put it, Fusion will contain a superset of Resolve 15 Fusion functionality. Fusion, then, will continue as a standalone product both in its paid and free versions. Note, though, that beginning with Resolve 15, a Fusion dongle will also unlock Blackmagic Studio giving those users who purchased Fusion an extra Resolve seat.
So, I’m happy. ????Ricardo cardona
