I had to buy a BetaSP deck for some broadcast work we’re doing. What do you guys use to feed the reference signal to your Beta decks? Recording and playing works fine, monitoring is only showing half the picture without reference. All suggestions are appreciated.

I run my Beta SP deck through a Decklink SP. Reference is not needed. Same goes for AJA IOLA.

Are you using a capture card? How is your deck hooked up?

Right now the Beta get’s an S-Video signal from a Canopus ADVC 100. I just ordered a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card that will allow the Beta to get Component.

The best value for a sync generator right now is an Aja Gen10. It will cover all of your SD & HD needs, for around $400.

I got one of those Horita boxes for just over $300.

    Have a wonderful day.

Horita sells the rock bottom unit, about $250, look for PSBG for portable black burst generator.

However, almost ANY coherent video signal will satisfy most of the BetaCam decks. Composite video should be usable without blackburst or another genlock signal but you would not be able to take the untimed signal into a switcher. Check the manual carefully for possible reference inputs, you may already have something laying around that will do the job. Also, if you have a used electronics shop in your market area, they may have something dirt cheap. Also might be worth calling anyone you know in the engineering functions at any tv or cable outfits. Sync-source and house-source electronics get replaced regularly but the old gear is rarely junked.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
