I am working on a video for our church for Christmas. What I want to do is film a single person walking through town past all the sales, lights, decorations, etc. While going past all of this I want the person to be black and white, while everything else is in color. Finally after the person stops to look at a live nativity scene, everything will be in color. I’m using a Sony VX2100 to shoot, at night, and Vegas 5 to edit. Any suggestions as to how I can do this? I do have Gary’s Vegas 5 Companion DVD set (great instruction set), is there a section on a DVD where this is explained? Any ideas would be appreciated as I’m due to start shooting this week.

    Doug,

You’ll find the section on Color Pass on Disc 5/Chapter 13.
However, what you are trying to achieve is a lot more complicatd than isolating one or two colors.
You’ll need to green screen, or create a complicated matt.

    Gary,

What if I reverse the idea? In other words, the subject will be in color and everything else in B&W. I’ve read some of Edward’s newsletters and have experimented with the secondary color corrector which seems to do this, but will it still be complicated because of all the colors in all the decorations and lights? What I’m trying to do is get accross the message that the subject is surounded by all the trappings of Christmas, but still feeling isolated and empty. Not until he sees the nativity scene and remembers the true meaning of Christmas, does he feel the joy of the season. I will be using no spoken or written word, only the music and the actor to get the point across. The effect I need is to isolate the subject from everything else, until the nativity scene, where he will blend into the world around him. Any other ideas of how I can “highlight” the subject? I really appreciate your help, ideas and advice.

As Gary said, you’ll need to create a mask around that person. Since the same colors are everywhere, you can’t just go by color. Gary’s green screen suggestion is also worth considering.
