Black Magic Cinema Camera vs. Canon 7d
Hello All,
I will be DPing a short for the 48hr film fest and am trying to figure out which is the most practical camera for such a fest in which we’d have 48hrs to shoot and edit a movie.
My curiosity is leaning towards the black magic and its 2.5k raw shooting resolutioin. My reservation however lies in the fact that converting the raw files will be time consuming given the time crunching nature of the 48hr film fest.
Are there any shooters out there that have used the BMCC for the 48hr film fest or similar situation that can contest to if shooting 2.5k raw is even worth it under those conditions?
Are the Prores or DNxHD shooting resolutions of the BMCC camera a better option?
What camera would you choose to shoot with if you were in my shoes?

If time is everything and you have to bake in the look, shoot ProRes if you are editing in FCP X & 7, DNxHD for AVID. Remember if you are shooting 2.5K you’ll most likely have to output a 1080 HD version for viewing.
If you have the time and can do decent grading, shoot RAW.

Thanks so much Warren. The more research I do shooting ProRes over Raw on the BMCC seems to best match my needs.
Image quality wise, would you recommend shooting BMCC Pro Res over H264 with the 7D?

Yes. ProRes is 4:2:2 10bit. h.264 is 8bit 4:2:0. You will get banding if care is not taken in lighting and transitioning from the highlights to shadow. ProRes is just cleaner.
