Assuming that you’re using Adobe CC or later I would do the following.

Apply an adjustment layer to your timeline and apply a LUT to that. This is assuming that all of your media is BMD and pretty similar. This will give it the tonal characteristics you’re looking for. Then you can take the timeline into Speedgrade to adjust the LUT to fit you and to individually adjust the shots on a per clip basis to get your final grade.

Dennis is right on, but to expand a bit on his answer a LUT is not a requirement for any workflow.

The conversion LUTs to take camera log to something with more reasonable contrast is that vendor’s “best guess average scenario”. The workflow in this case is either slap it on because you don’t have time to color grade or as a temp look until grading.
